Thanks, Serena. Getting kids to take any medication can be a challenge. No kid likes the taste, but if the doc and pharmacist say it's okay to mix with food, that helps. Just make sure your child eats all of the food so he/she gets the full dose of medicine.

My husband says both he and his father have small esophaguses, and they both have problems swallowing pills. I have no idea if that's even biologically possible, but you do have to wonder why some people can swallow pills without a problem and others choke and gag.

You're right, Kate. Kids and dogs can both manage to swallow everything EXCEPT the pill. LMAO!

Great info! We always cut the pills into smaller sizes, too. Seems obvious, but those little pieces are so much easier/not noticeable to the swallower. (Unless the swallower is a dog, who senses them and gobbles the bread/chicken/delivery device while artfully spitting out the sticky, gross pill. But I guess that's another blog altogether.)

I couldn't swallow pills till I was in middle school (though my 10-year-old has no problem). The filling-the-mouth-up trick worked for me as a kid, as did mashing it up in some honey to get rid of the bitter taste. Eventually I got it -- I think when I had to practice taking horse-size pills for one of my many bouts with sore throat when I was a kid -- I finally just got over it.

Whoops, that posted too soon. Was also going to add that I have a friend who taught his son to swallow pills by rolling little pill-sized balls out of taffy. There was no risk of an icky taste as he practiced, and less fear because it was a known food item.

Thyroid testing seems to be one of those things many doctors like to skim over. I'd like to read more about the tests, what they mean and how best to push docs to pay attention. I'm close but not in the hypo-thyroid range but family history on my mother's side suggests this is a real and continuing problem.
